Metronidazole is an antibiotic effective against anaerobic bacteria and certain parasites. Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow resulting in a relapse of the infection. Metronidazole is a valuable antibiotic and is generally well tolerated with appropriate use.
